Katelyn Cockerham

What is your favorite part of serving on the school board?

My favorite part has genuinely been the relationships that I have made! I have loved learning this side of things and being able to be that parental voice on the board since I have small children in the school system currently.

Do you have a favorite quote or personal motto?

“If you want to change the world, go home and love your family.” My work here at LPSB and with The American Cancer Society is so important and fulfilling to me, but keeping my family first and raising my kids to be good humans will always be my biggest accomplishment.

What inspired you to join the school board?

Since I was a child, I have always wanted to serve in local government because I want a seat at the table at which decisions are being made about my community. Once I had children of my own, I knew I wanted to be involved with the school board because the quality of their education is so important to me. Thriving communities have thriving public school systems and I want to do my part to make sure that Livingston Parish thrives for generations to come.

What do you hope to accomplish during your term?

My main goal is always to be a voice for the Walker district. Being a millennial on the board, I aim to bring a new level of transparency and availability for not only the principals, administrators, and teachers- but also for the parents in my district. I hope that everyone in my district finds me approachable and willing to listen (and act) on their concerns.

What’s a fun fact about you?

I love to read, especially Historical Fiction books, and I am trying my best to pass that passion down to my kids! All three of them have participated or are participating in the 1,000 Books Before Kindergarten challenge through our local Library System.
