Volunteers Set to Distribute Supplies to All Livingston Parish Schools on August 4
Thousands of Supplies Already Sorted for Each School’s Needs
LIVINGSTON, La. – Volunteers with this year’s ASSESS THE NEED campaign will be in full action at the Livingston Parish Literacy & Technology Center’s Automotive Center in Walker this Thursday, Aug. 4, from 7 a.m. to 10 a.m. to greet school representatives with thousands of supplies that have been packaged, stacked and sorted to each school’s needs.
Livingston Parish Assessor Jeff Taylor, who is in his 22nd consecutive year of sponsoring the program, said his team has organized supplies for more than 3,000 students across the parish and across every age group.
“This is always a rewarding day; when we get to give every school the supplies they requested to assist the students on their campus who need help,” Taylor said. “The only thing more rewarding is knowing the teachers and counselors on those campuses get to put the supplies in the hands of the kids.”
Taylor said each school is working with ASSESS THE NEED to send a driver to pick up the supplies on Thursday. The Automotive Center is designed in such a way that the driver can literally “drive through to get their order,” he said.
“By getting these supplies out now, it allows each school to have time to sort them so they can be handed out to the students next week, in their first days of the new school year,” Taylor said.
Taylor noted that volunteers will be collecting donations for the program at eight local grocery stores across the parish on Aug. 6-7 and Aug. 20-21. They will be at Carter’s Supermarkets in Albany, Springfield, Livingston, Walker, DS-Vincent Road and DS-Hatchell Lane; Oak Village Fresh Market in Watson; and Village Supermarket in Port Vincent.
“All the collections will go to pay for the supplies,” Taylor said. “Each year the program requires a little faith, because we must secure the order well before we get all the money in. So far, the people of Livingston Parish have never let us come up short.”
Taylor said donations can also be given through Venmo @Assess-The-Need-1, mailed to Assess the Need, P.O. Box 1802, Denham Springs, LA 70727-1802, or dropped off at the Livingston Parish Assessor’s Office, located on Government Boulevard in Livingston; Monday-Thursday from 7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. All donations are tax deductible.
